Veterinarian Faith Banks specialises in palliative care, regularly supporting owners and their pets during their final moments together.
"The last words you say to your pet are very special and meaningful", she explained in a poignant clip shared to TikTok.
Choosing the right words
"I love you", "Thank you", "See you soon" or "Wait for me" all carry a simple message of comfort and love, reassuring your pet as they prepare to cross the rainbow bridge.
But there's one phrase Faith hears frequently, and she strongly recommends that owners avoid using it.
Words to avoid
"I'm sorry" is a phrase Faith often hears during an owner's final moments with their beloved companion. For her, these words bring a sense of sadness to both human and pet.
"I don't like to hear it because I feel that these people have done a lot for their pet. I understand being sorry that they can't be together anymore, but I hope these people aren't apologising for something they've done wrong", she explained.
Instead of an apology, Faith reminded viewers that words of love, gratitude and appreciation often resonate most deeply, bringing comfort to the animal and a sense of kindness and respect.
