Even after being adopted by Erin Chalhub in 2015, she remained distant from other dogs. That was until she struck up an unusual friendship.
Martha was visiting a local park when she stopped under a tree, seemingly captivated by the squirrels above. Instead of chasing them, though, the Boxer sat perfectly still.

Over time, the squirrels began to trust her, inching closer until they ran around her paws.
“For hours, she would sit like a statue while they played around her,” said Chalhub. “It was like they recognised she wasn’t a threat.”
Martha meets Cali
Their friendship became a weekend ritual, with Martha and Chalhub visiting the tree every Saturday and Sunday.
Soon, Martha’s bond with the squirrels helped her make her first canine friend, a German Shepherd named Cali.
Cali’s owner had hoped she’d learn to resist chasing squirrels by watching Martha’s patience. While that lesson never stuck, the two dogs formed an unexpected friendship, playing off-leash together.
Now, Martha has found companionship in both squirrels and dogs, proof that even the grumpiest souls can find friends in the most unexpected places.
