Sgt. Pepper's Friends shelter in Aruba regularly steps in to help animals in need.
But as experienced as the team is, there are still some cases that leave them in disbelief.
A big surprise
On the morning in question, a volunteer was about to enter the shelter, when he spotted two taped-up boxes outside the gate.
Through one of the holes in the cardboard he could see a small, furry body desperately trying to get out.
Opening up the boxes, the team found a litter of 8-week-old puppies, huddled together and absolutely terrified.
In the heat of December, the puppies had become worryingly dehydrated. Thankfully, despite their poor condition, they were friendly and happy to be handled by people.
In good hands
Heartbreakingly, these aren't the first puppies that have been left on the shelter's doorstep. In the last six months, two other boxes have been abandoned outside the shelter with dogs inside.
Once the puppies get a clean bill of health, they will be up for adoption on the island of Aruba. The rescue also re-homes to Toronto, if the right family comes forward and the puppies can be adopted by shelter partners in the Netherlands from 4 months old and in the United States from 6 months old.
This will increase their chances of finding loving, forever families as quickly as possible.
