The puppy’s owners, hoping to provide their pets with a fun distraction, were horrified when the toy led to a medical emergency.
After hours of play, the dog began ingesting threads from the rope, resulting in a serious intestinal blockage.
Three-hour surgery
The puppy was rushed to the Cabinet Vétérinaire des Sources, where he underwent a three-hour surgery involving both stomach and intestinal procedures to remove the dangerous fibres.
Although the dog was at risk of life-threatening complications, including peritonitis, he fortunately recovered and was able to eat again within 24 hours.
The clinic is now warning dog owners about the hidden dangers of these common toys.
Close supervision
While rope toys are visually appealing and easily accessible, they are clearly not as durable as they should be.
Dogs can break apart the fibres, leading to dangerous ingestion. The clinic advises that such toys only be used under close supervision or replaced with safer alternatives.
