While on the trail, they came across a litter of 10 newborn puppies nestled around a tree trunk, with their exhausted mother nearby.
The visibly malnourished mother dog was wary but didn't run away or react aggressively, instead focusing on her pups.
Rescue mission
The hikers contacted Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) for help, and after gaining the mother's trust, they managed to transport the entire family to the rescue's headquarters.
Upon examination, the puppies were found to be in relatively good health, but the mother dog was suffering from malnutrition and dehydration after prioritizing her pups' well-being.
The rescue team named the mother dog "Mary, Queen of Scots" and gave the puppies playful names inspired by professional golfers, coinciding with their annual golf fundraiser. Ricky Howler, Roary McIlroy, Tiger Woofs, Graeme McHowel, Betsy Jawls, Inbee Bark, Doggie Pepper, Louis Puggs, Arnold Pawmer and Woofy Austin.
Foster home
After a few days, the family was taken in by a foster mum who provided them with round-the-clock care and nutrition.
The mother and her puppies are now thriving, and SRSL is hopeful they will all find loving homes in the coming months.
Mary is finally receiving the care she desperately needs while continuing to look after her growing puppies in a safe, supportive environment.
