They notice a dog sitting patiently on its own with a handwritten note around its neck. They approach, they read the note, and in a heartbeat, they fall in love.

A shopping mall in Altoona, Pennsylvania, is the favourite haunt of Steve Moore and his dog, Jackson. When the pair visits the shops together, they attract dozens of adoring fans.

Three-year-old Jackson was filmed sitting outside shops a few years ago with a sign around his neck that read, “Dad told me to wait here. Me waiting.”

Patient and friendly

The Golden Retriever’s patience is matched only by his friendly temperament. As a result, Jackson is never alone while he waits for his owner; instead, he is surrounded by other shoppers who find his gentle presence captivating. However, while Jackson’s popularity has amazed Mr Moore, it has also puzzled him, given the dramatic change in people's attitudes. After all, there was a time when no one wanted the adorable pup.

Earlier this year, Jackson was abandoned at a shelter, unwanted and unloved. Steve adopted him shortly afterwards.

“Everybody wants to take him home,” Moore explained. “I find that amazing because four weeks ago, nobody wanted him.”

The Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever, like the Labrador, is a popular choice of therapy dog. Due to its high intelligence and adaptability, it is a breed commonly seen as a guide or assistance dog.

They are also renowned for their friendliness and gentleness. They are docile enough to provide good company for the elderly and robust enough to withstand children's rough play.

Likely, Jackson also exhibits another positive retriever trait: loyalty. This is yet another string to the breed’s bow.

If you own a Golden Retriever and have a desire to volunteer for charity work, consider contacting one of the many UK charities that use dogs in their line of work. They would be pleased to hear from you.
