Kabosu the Shiba Inu became a worldwide sensation in 2013 when a photo of her went viral and started being used as a meme. Following the meme fame, Kabosu then became the inspiration behind the Doge meme cryptocurrency.
Viral Doge meme dog passes away
But Kabosu was getting old, and in recent times, unwell. Her owner, Atsuko, revealed that she had passed away peacefully in her sleep today.
In the touching Instagram post, she wrote:
"I am certain that Kabosu was the happiest dog in the world. That makes me the happiest owner in the world."
The world in grief
Atsuko is holding a farewell party for the viral Doge on Sunday 26 May at Flower Kaori in Kotsu no Mori, Narita City.
Fans all over the world have been sharing their condolences, showing just how many lives the little dog touched. Dogecoin also paid tribute to the little dog:
"The impact this one dog has made across the world is immeasurable. She was a being who knew only happiness and limitless love. Please keep her spirit and her family in your heart, and most importantly carry her with you as your story continues - we are all fortunate for hers to have touched and shaped ours."
