A lost dog’s desperate four-day search for help finally ended all thanks to a group of unlikely heroes: storks.

The floodplains of Poland’s Narew Valley are home to many storks, attracting eager birdwatchers who are keen to follow their activities in Łomża Landscape Park.

Intriguing footage

While it’s a hotspot for birdwatching, the marshy and flooded terrain can make it very challenging to navigate safely. Because of that, several webcams are set up so that birdwatchers can keep an eye on the storks from anywhere in the world.

One day, a group of avid birdwatchers were checking out the webcam footage for the first storks of the season when they spotted something strange. It wasn’t a stork but something large and with a reddish tint that looked out of place. It was a lost dog!

The group immediately contacted the Country Park to let them know, much to the surprise of the park staff. You see, they’d already caught a glimpse of the dog, but from a distance, they thought it was a fox, so they hadn’t done anything about it.

But hearing that a lost dog was wandering around the floodplains, a rescue operation was quickly launched, but this wouldn’t be easy. The dog, whose name would later be revealed to be Rudy, was afraid of the water. It became obvious that the pup couldn’t swim and lacked experience in the water.

Rescue operation and reunion

So, the park staff called in the Fire Brigade to lend a helping hand.

Using a boat, they swam up to the islet where the dog was sitting and after enticing him with some dog treats, they got the dog onto the boat.

Back on dry land, the vet gave the dog a thorough check-over, and he was found to be in good health and had no injuries from his adventures.

Once all the drama was over, the park staff shared photos of the dog on social media. And the good news? They were finally able to reunite the dog with his very worried owners. All's well that ends well!
