Spending days or months at a shelter can take its toll on any dog.
And this is exactly what happened to little Lele, who was scared and confused after her family abandoned her.
Terrified and alone
The heartwarming case of this poor pup really goes to show how much patience and understanding is needed when it comes to offering a dog a second chance in life.
When Lele came into the Tampa Bay Society shelter, she was left so traumatised she couldn't even walk down the hallway. Staff desperately hoped she would find the right home, but they knew it would take a very special family to adopt her.
Loving and patient people
Her second chance came in the form of Joseph and Dee, who came into the rescue looking for their new furry friend.
It was love at first sight when they met Lele, and they spent a long time gaining her trust.
At first, they simply stood near her, letting her get used to their presence without putting any pressure on her to interact.
Little by little, her confidence grew, and she gradually approached them for cuddles.
Joseph and Dee decided to sign the adoption papers, fully understanding of the fact that she would need lots of time to settle.
When it came to leaving her kennel, Lele was so frightened that she had to be carried out to the car. But this was no deterrent for this amazing couple.
"It's ok, we will give her plenty of time, even if she needs 10 minutes to get out of the car when we get home", said Joseph to the staff of Tampa Bay Society, filling them with confidence that she was in the right hands.
Now Lele will get to enjoy all the compassion and companionship she deserves, in her loving forever home.
