Recent research suggests that dogs experience emotion in the same way humans do. Examples of this include jealousy, sadness and excitement.
Whether or not dogs can cry remains to be seen, but there's no doubt, watching this poor pup's video, that he seems to be shedding some tears.
Such sadness
Having been left at the shelter by the person he believed was his family, AJ clearly felt totally betrayed. Terrified and alone, it really does look as if the Labrador - Pitbull mix is crying.
The moving clip was filmed in 2016, after AJ and his brother Tony were left at the shelter by their owner. Their world had completely collapsed, and they were clearly heartbroken.
A happy ending
Realising how devastated AJ and Tony were at the loss of their owner, staff at the Carson Animal Shelter in California decided to share their story far and wide. While finding a home for two adult dogs together may have been a challenge, they knew they had to try.
Thankfully, their post received an amazing 6 million views on Facebook, which resulted in the inseparable pair finding a loving forever home together.
