Last week, Jaxon Feeley’s 2-year-old Weimaraner, Rambo, started feeling sick. After she vomited over 30 times overnight, Jaxon knew he had to take her to the vet.
That’s when he discovered that Rambo had suffered hypovolemic shock. This involves severe blood loss, which makes the heart unable to pump enough blood to the rest of the body, causing many organs to shut down. Rambo had to be kept in intensive care.
A sudden turn for the worst
But despite the vets’ efforts, her condition took a turn for the worst. Not only did she contract stomach flu, but fluid started descending into her lungs - causing pneumonia and one of her lungs to collapse.
In the vet’s words: "Rambo could not have been any more unlucky with what happened."
To give his best friend the strength to survive, Jaxon decided to live in his car outside the vet clinic, day and night, while she was being treated. Going into the clinic for a few minutes every four hours, Jaxon was letting Rambo know that she wasn’t alone, that she was loved, and that he was always there for her.
Understandably, the vet bills started to stack up as the days went by. Though pet insurance covered about £6,000, the cost of Rambo’s treatment and constant care at the clinic was over £11,000. And if surgery were needed, the cost would rise even further.
In the hopes of being able to afford it all, Jaxon set up a GoFundMe page so people could donate towards Rambo’s treatment. Jaxon said there was "no way in hell" he was going to let his dog die, and that he’d go as far as selling his house to pay for her care if he needed to.
But thankfully, he didn’t have to. Thousands of people worldwide heard about Rambo’s fight for life and Jaxon’s determination to save her. The GoFundMe page has so far collected over £22,000.
Hope for the future
And all of Jaxon’s hard work has paid off. Two days ago, he came home with Rambo by his side. Though the road to recovery will be a long one, she can now do it within the comfort of her own home with her doggy sibling and her beloved owner supporting her at all times.
This story is truly one of unconditional love. We wish Rambo the best during her recovery!
