A miniature dachshund who vanished in the wilds of Kangaroo Island has returned home after 529 days – fatter and shinier than before.

The Dachshund's surprising condition after hundreds of days missing has sparked speculation over who, or what, cared for her.

Valerie, who weighed just 4kg when she disappeared from Stokes Bay in late 2023, has gained nearly 2kg, emerging stocky, silky-coated, and in “perfect health”, according to rescuers at Kangala Wildlife Rescue.

Emotional reunion

Owners Georgia Gardner and Josh Fishlock were reunited with their pet on Tuesday, saying she “wiggled with joy” and barely fit her old harness. But mystery surrounds how the small dog thrived in the rugged South Australian wilderness, home to feral cats, snakes, and other predators.

Kangaroo Island mayor Michael Pengilly said locals believe Valerie was secretly fed and perhaps even groomed. “There’s no way she survived that long alone looking like that,” he said.

The mystery continues

Rescuers tracked Valerie for months before trapping her in April. They suggested possums or feral cats may have groomed her. While some online users have hinted at a publicity stunt, the charity maintains that their care was genuine.

While what happened to Valerie may always be a mystery, the little dog now returns to Albury to live with her feline friend and two canine companions, healthier than ever.
