A three-month-old puppy was left in an airport toilet along with a heartbreaking note from its owner. But don't worry, this tragic 'tail' has a happy ending.

Thankfully, the pup, an adorable little Chihuahua, called Chewy, only spent a short time in the bathroom at Las Vegas Airport, Nevada, USA. He was found by a traveller who had just got off a long flight.

Don't judge yet

Airport workers were shocked that anybody would abandon a pup like this. A few were outright furious. And rightly so.

But not every story is as straightforward as it seems. And while there's always a better option than abandoning a dog for strangers to find, Chewy's former owner did it out of pure desperation, not cruelty.

A note rescuers found with Chewy explained the heartbreaking situation. It read:

"Hi. I'm Chewy! My owner was in an abusive relationship and couldn't afford me to get on the flight. She didn't want to leave me with all her heart, but she has NO other option. My ex-boyfriend kicked my dog when we were fighting, and Chewy has a BIG knot on his head. He probably needs a vet. I love Chewy so much. Please love and take care of him."

Chewy was taken to Millie's Dog Rescue in Las Vegas, where he received the all-clear from vets.

Chewy feels the love

Staff posted Chewy's story on their Facebook page, and the offers of a forever home poured in. Specialist adoption officers worked through more than 1,000 applications. The shelter was also open to reuniting the pup with his former owner, if she was in a position to keep herself and Chewy safe:

"We will absolutely reunite should she come forward and wants him and is in the position to care for him safely," said a spokesperson from Millie's Dog Rescue. "Her safety is a major concern, and she may be unable to risk coming forward. Connor and Millie's Dog Rescue asks that you respect her decision, as it is hers and hers alone to make."

We're not sure how the story ended, but we're certain that everything turned out ok for adorable Chewy.
