A shepherd dog showed why its breed is a born protector. He was filmed 'saving' his baby sister by pulling her out of the sea and carrying her to safety.

When it comes to doing what they were born to do, few dogs take their duties as seriously as the giant Caucasian Shepherd. First bred as large guardian dogs, these canines spent hundreds of years protecting livestock and farms in Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Today, many people keep these adorable giants as pets. And while it's more of a domesticated dog nowadays, the Caucasian Shepherd hasn't lost any of those protector instincts. And they really kick in when it comes to looking after favoured humans.

An adorable rescue

A YouTube video revealed how far the Caucasian Shepherd will go for its people. The short 30-second clip shows a young girl playing in the sea on a hot summer's day.

She rolls around in the ocean, letting the cool waves wash over her. Her best friend in the whole world, a big Caucasian Shepherd, stands a few metres away; he's keeping a watchful eye on his baby sister.

The waves get a little stronger. And though the girl is in no danger, the dog is like, 'OK, that's enough ocean for you today, little 'hooman.' Let's take you back to dry land."

I was born for this, hooman!

He then gently takes the girl's t-shirt in his mouth, pulling her from the sea and onto the dry sand. When the girl is out of 'harm's way,' the dog sits down, looking very pleased with himself. And so he should. This is what he was born to do. A job well done!

"I'm thinking of trying to hire this dog as my babysitter," reads one YouTube comment. Another viewer wrote, "Beautiful. Truly heartwarming. This video is so pure. It brightens up my day."
