What began as a simple act of kindness nearly landed a man in trouble with the law after he mistakenly took home what he thought was a stray puppy.

Marcy, from Tsukigata in Japan, was walking through the city streets when he spotted a small animal alone and abandoned.

Believing it to be a dog in need, he scooped it up and decided to care for it until its owner could be found or perhaps even keep it himself.

Adorable puppy

Once home, Marcy shared photos online, proudly introducing what he believed to be the most adorable puppy in Japan. While many praised his good deed, others quickly pointed out a startling possibility: the animal was not a dog at all.

That's not a dog!

Concerned, Marcy took the creature to a vet, where his fears were confirmed. The supposed puppy was actually a kitsune, a type of urban fox.

Although fond of his new companion, Marcy soon learned that keeping a fox as a pet is illegal in Japan. After a few days, he reluctantly took it to a dedicated fox shelter where it could be cared for properly.
