Rescuers find cage abandoned in the forest: a sudden meow leaves them speechless

By Elise Petter

Just off a path near a railway line, a pet carrier sitting in the undergrowth caught someone's eye. Inside, four tiny creatures were waiting, frightened but safe and sound. Quick action was needed to bring these helpless, abandoned lives to safety.

A heartbreaking discovery

Volunteers from the Le Domaine Animal shelter in Trois-Rivières, Canada, could hardly believe their eyes when they were called out to a worrying situation. Inside the carrier, which had been left without food or water, were four adorable kittens. Despite being stressed and scared, the little felines were thankfully in good health.

“It was really sad, alarming, and deplorable,” said Alexandra Dussault-Perreault, the shelter's owner. Left at the mercy of the elements and predators, their fate could have been tragic. The team immediately took the kittens in to bring them somewhere warm and safe.

An unexpected and poignant return

But the story didn't end there. Just as the rescuers had got the little ones to safety, a surprise was waiting for them. A plaintive meow could be heard not far from the now-empty carrier. It was their mother.

Having returned to the spot, the mother cat was desperately searching for her babies. It was an incredibly sad sight that showed her strong maternal instinct. She was found meowing inside the carrier, completely distraught to find her offspring gone. The volunteers managed to gently rescue her, their hearts heavy at the sight.

A family finally reunited and safe

Fortunately, this sad story has a happy ending. The mother and her four kittens have been reunited and placed together in a temporary foster home. This helps to avoid any extra stress, allowing the little family to recover in a loving environment.

The shelter team wants to remind pet owners going through a tough time that there is always help available. “There are so many ways to get in touch,” Alexandra Dussault-Perreault urges, encouraging anyone in need to contact local charities before resorting to such desperate measures.
