Builders renovating bathroom accidentally seal family cat under the bath

By Elise Petter

During building work, Fluffy the cat vanished. After a 30-hour search, his family made a completely unexpected discovery.

For Melissa and Ed Kirby, a couple living in Needham, Massachusetts, in the USA, the building work was meant to be a simple bathroom makeover. But as soon as the builders left, the day took a much more worrying turn. Fluffy, their beautiful snow-white cat, suddenly vanished without trace.

Convinced that their pet had slipped outside through a door left ajar as people came and went, Melissa and Ed immediately started searching the neighbourhood. Their first night without him was incredibly tough, filled with uncertainty and fears for their beloved companion's safety.

Pulling out all the stops to find him

The next morning, refusing to give up, the couple pulled out all the stops. They put up posters all over the area and even called in a lost pet specialist. Equipped with a German Shepherd specially trained in tracking, the expert meticulously searched the surrounding area, but failed to find any scent.

As the hours ticked by, hope began to fade. Exhausted and overwhelmed by grief, Melissa went upstairs to be alone, convinced she would never see her lovely little companion again.

A soft sound in the quiet house

As she wept quietly, Melissa suddenly heard a faint, familiar sound: a tiny, muffled meow. "I thought I was imagining things," she later told NBC 10 Boston. Holding her breath, she listened closely again, and the noise was repeated.

Guided by these faint cries, Melissa and Ed rushed into the newly renovated bathroom. Looking closely around the bottom of the room, they realised the incredible truth. Inquisitive Fluffy had slipped under the bath panelling during the work, and the builders had sealed him in by accident. Freed safe and sound after 30 tense hours, the cat was quickly back in the comforting arms of his relieved owners.
