The 15-year-old cat went through a terribly difficult ordeal in her flat in New York. Her two owners passed away just a few days apart.
Left all alone
While the family's two dogs were quickly taken in by animal services, Thai was left behind. The officers who went to the scene failed to spot her, even though relatives had reported she was there.
For several days, the cat waited in silence, unable to understand why no one was coming back. Fortunately, people were fighting to free her. Realising how urgent the situation was, the charity Big Apple Cats decided to step in and try to save her life.
Kelly Mahoney, the founder of Big Apple Cats, worked tirelessly to get the flat opened. After making numerous calls and visiting the local authorities, she finally secured the necessary permission to enter the home.
A true miracle
When the door finally opened, the rescuers feared they would find a very sick, or even lifeless, cat. However, Thai had quite a surprise in store for them! She was very much alive, meowing loudly as if to say she had been waiting for help for a long time.
Although she was dirty, weak and hungry, she quickly showed how incredibly sweet-natured she was. Despite spending days alone, the vet found her to be in surprisingly good health. Thai was given medical care, plenty of food, and a cosy place to rest.
Planning for the future
Today, Thai is living with a foster family who plan to adopt her permanently. The shelter has used this opportunity to remind owners how important it is to plan for their pets' future. It is vital to appoint a trusted contact, write down your wishes, and make sure your beloved companion is never left forgotten.
