Couple thinks they've seen a cat, when they realise it isn't a cat at all

A bright white shape in the grass

Britni Michelle and her partner recently went for a drive near their home in Vermont, USA, to admire the changing autumn leaves in the woods. They were expecting beautiful scenery, not an unexpected encounter. As they were driving along, Britni spotted a bright white shape in the grass by the side of the road. She initially thought it was a cat, until the animal started to cross right in front of her car.

It was actually a porcupine that appeared to be albino. Quite plump, it strolled calmly across the road, climbed up a hill, and disappeared from view. "I questioned what I was seeing," Britni told The Dodo, adding that she found it utterly adorable.

A rare sight: around one in 10,000

According to the Center for Wildlife, a wildlife rescue centre in Maine, USA, only about one in 10,000 porcupines is born albino. Albinism is a genetic condition that causes a lack of melanin, the pigment responsible for colouring skin, fur, and eyes.

This striking feature comes with its risks. A spokesperson for the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, quoted by TBnewswatch, explained that such colour variations can make an animal much more visible and far more vulnerable to predators.

Albino or not? A slight distinction

In this particular case in Vermont, reports only state that the porcupine "seemed" albino, as its true status hasn't been confirmed. The Ontario Ministry also pointed out that a light-coloured porcupine with dark pigments around its eyes and nose isn't a true albino. Instead, its coat is usually more sand or cream-coloured.

A truly memorable encounter

Neither Britni nor her partner had ever seen a white porcupine before. The unexpected meeting made their drive even more special, and for Britni, it completely made their day.
