A surprising discovery on the doorstep
Last week, a New York resident went to collect their Amazon delivery, only to notice a grey tabby cat curled up on top of the cardboard box. At first, they thought the cat was just having a peaceful nap, but it soon became clear that he was actually elderly and very weak. Alarmed by his lethargic state, the finder immediately contacted local rescue charity PuppyKittyNYCity (PKNYC).
Volunteers quickly arrived at the scene and realised straight away that they were dealing with a sick, elderly stray. "He appeared on a stranger's doorstep in a critical state, with only Amazon parcels for comfort," PKNYC wrote on Instagram. No one knows how long the cat, who has since been named Maribel, had been fending for himself before finally being rescued.
A heartbreaking medical diagnosis
Once back at PKNYC headquarters, Maribel was given a thorough veterinary check-up, which revealed that his health was much more fragile than initially thought. On top of recovering from an infection, the sweet cat is also suffering from heart disease and asthma. He needed to be hospitalised straight away, and his treatment was started without delay. However, the noisy, bustling environment of the shelter is now starting to take a toll on his spirits.
Hoping for a quiet home to heal
A week after his rescue, Maribel is getting stronger by the day, but he has yet to find a family of his own. The rescue team knows all too well that a quiet, loving home would speed up his recovery much faster than staying in a shelter pen. PKNYC summed up the emotional situation: "He is waiting in a cage for someone to adopt him."
