Drivers speeding along the A45 motorway near Münzenberg in Hesse, Germany, are usually focused on the traffic, not the grassy verge. But on 18th April 2026, someone noticed something unusual. In this case, it was a matter of life and death.
Lying in the grass, just inches from the road, was a black fleecy blanket with white spots. But this blanket was just the tip of the iceberg of a situation that is causing panic among animal welfare advocates.
A disturbing discovery
The cosy black blanket, decorated with paw prints, belonged to a terrified ginger cat who had been abandoned there. Someone had coldly and deliberately dumped the animal in this spot.
What makes this discovery so unbearable is its dark history. Just a few days earlier, on 15th April, a similar and even more tragic incident had occurred just a few yards away.
Someone had already abandoned a cat in that very same spot. By the time rescuers arrived, it was sadly too late. The poor animal had been hit by a car. Its injuries were so severe that the vets had no choice but to put the poor cat to sleep.
A frantic race against time
A short time later, when a second alert came into the Butzbach animal shelter, it became clear that the culprit had struck again in the same spot. Panic set in among the volunteers. Would they be able to save the ginger cat this time?
An exhausting race against time and encroaching darkness began. It wasn't until late in the evening, around 10 pm, that they could finally breathe a sigh of relief. The ginger cat was safe. Apart from a few ticks and minor injuries, he had survived his ordeal by the motorway unharmed.
A third cat soon?
But the anger at such incomprehensible cruelty remains. It seems someone is systematically using this stretch of the A45 to dump defenceless animals.
Since no one knows if the culprit will strike again and put more lives at risk, the Butzbach animal shelter is making a desperate appeal to the public. They are urging drivers in the Münzenberg area to stay vigilant. The slightest movement in the grass could be another victim, desperately waiting for help.
