On the evening of Tuesday, 18th June 2025, a family in Spring, a town in Harris County, Texas (USA), experienced a living nightmare.
At around 10 p.m., unusual barking was heard from the fenced garden. On her Instagram account, @thelilruffhouse, the owner of four small Dachshunds explains that she knew instantly her pets were in danger.
'I knew something was wrong'
Convinced that a wild animal had likely entered the property, she decided to lock the dog flap. When she went outside with a torch, her dog Cricket led her straight to the culprit: a small copperhead snake, coiled up near the fence. Sadly, the reptile had already struck, attacking the dogs.
The first signs of poisoning appeared very quickly. "Cora started vomiting and reacting, so I knew straight away she'd been bitten. Foxy's mouth was swelling up, and Cleo hid under my desk and tried to burrow under the beds, so I realised she'd been hit too," their owner explained. In a video posted on 22nd June, the owner recounted the minutes that followed. Cora began to convulse before losing consciousness. Cleo and Foxy had swollen muzzles, and Cricket, the group's sentinel, had glassy eyes and slight swelling.
A race against time
The four Dachshunds were rushed to an emergency vet, where one of the dogs, Cora, was in a critical condition. The clinic's team administered first aid while preparing the owners to face a difficult decision if her condition worsened. While three of the dogs recovered quickly, Cora required intensive care. Thankfully, the worst-case scenario was gradually averted, but the little dog's recovery still required close monitoring. This incident is a stark reminder to remain vigilant about the dangers lurking in nature during the summer months.
