When inspectors from a Polish animal rescue organisation arrived at the property, they found a filthy yard and a neglected dog chained up amidst his own faeces. Next to him, a makeshift kennel filled with dirt and the remains of dead birds completed the depressing scene. But the true horror was revealed when the volunteers got closer to the animal.
The dog had a chain embedded in his flesh. It appeared the metal chain hadn't been loosened for years. As the dog grew and his neck thickened, the chain had sunk deep into his tissue. It was impossible to free him on the spot, as every movement caused excruciating pain. He was rushed to a veterinary clinic for emergency treatment.
A devastating diagnosis
The examination confirmed the rescuers' worst fears. Around the dog's neck was a traumatic, inflamed wound measuring almost 8 inches long and up to nearly an inch deep. The vet who treated him admitted she had never seen such tissue damage before.
In two specific places, the skin had grown completely over the metal links, a testament to years of suffering. The wound was infected and showing signs of necrosis, threatening to cause septicaemia. It took several hours of surgery to remove the metal from the dog's neck. He now faces a very long road to recovery, both physically and psychologically.
A fight for justice
"One cannot remain indifferent in the face of such suffering," the charity stated. The fight for justice is only just beginning. The organisation has announced it will be pressing criminal charges and reporting the case of animal cruelty to the relevant authorities.
The most important thing now is this survivor's future. After a life spent in darkness and pain, he must learn to trust humans again in the hope of finally finding a loving home, not a living hell like the one he endured:
