The two cats have been left traumatised.

Life hasn't been easy for these two cats. As reported by the American news site Newsweek, two cats who were adopted together have been returned to the shelter nine years later.

In a post that has since gone viral on Facebook, the US-based shelter Safe House Animal Rescue League spoke out, expressing their frustration at not being given the chance to “work out a plan” to properly welcome back Natalie and Sunshine.

We were told to take them immediately, despite there being no valid reason for such an urgent return.

An unexpected upheaval

The shelter had heard nothing from the adopter for nine years. Then, they received an email stating he needed to “return immediately” his cats because he was moving into a no-pets property.

This sudden demand created significant problems for the shelter, forcing them to cancel and reschedule other planned rescues.

The devastating impact

Beyond the scheduling issues, the shelter also condemned the owner's attitude: “Threatening to take the cats to an open-admission shelter if arrangements aren't made immediately is simply unacceptable. The requested veterinary records were not provided, leaving our organisation with the responsibility of updating their vaccinations and providing all other necessary care.

Unsurprisingly, the cats were traumatised by being abandoned. Staff and volunteers are now working with them to help them regain their confidence.
