On a day in late June, Gilles Gauthier was driving his car in France when an unusual noise caught his attention. It wasn't a mechanical rattle, but faint meows that seemed to be coming from his engine. Intrigued and a little worried, he pulled over to the side of the road and gently lifted the bonnet.
There, huddled right next to the battery, a young cat stared up at him with wide, frightened eyes. The tiny stowaway was stuck. With the help of a few passers-by who were touched by the scene, Gilles managed to gently coax the little creature out of its metal prison. He had no idea that this rescue was just the beginning of a wonderful story.
Ajax, the little runaway with a big heart
This little adventurer was none other than Ajax, an 11-month-old resident from the Enjoy Life shelter, located a few miles away in Ratte, eastern France. While his brothers and sisters had all found homes, the young cat was still waiting for his. Described as a *"prankster"* by the shelter staff, he had taken advantage of an open window to make his escape.
For two days, worry grew at the shelter. *"He is an affectionate cat who loves human company. It wasn't normal for him to be gone for so long,"* explained Océane Rougier, the shelter's founder. Nobody suspected that Ajax was taking matters into his own paws to find the home of his dreams.
A rescue that turned into an adoption
Once the cat was safe and back at the shelter, Gilles found out that his little protectee was up for adoption. Hearing the story, his daughter fell utterly in love and begged him to bring him home. For Gilles, the decision was a complete no-brainer.
And so, after his eventful escapade, Ajax finally found his forever home. It was a happy ending that brought immense joy to his rescuer and new owner. *"I am so happy to have adopted him,"* Gilles said emotionally, adding: *"I couldn't have wished for a better cat."*
