A scientific study, recently highlighted by the website Science Post, has revealed that our feline friends connect words with objects far more quickly than human infants.
To measure how cats learn without using food rewards, the research team adapted a trial known as the "Switch" protocol. This method is commonly used in developmental psychology to study how babies acquire language.
- The initial setup: 31 adult cats were placed in front of a screen showing two simple animations. As these played, they heard made-up words spoken by their owners.
- The test: Once the cats had paired the words with the images, the researchers switched the audio tracks so the wrong word played with the wrong image.
- The reaction: As soon as the pairing changed, the cats stared at the screen for significantly longer. Their pupils also dilated slightly, which is a clear behavioural sign of surprise and confusion at the mix-up.
A surprising result
The key finding: A 14-month-old human baby needs around 14 to 20 repetitions (or four 20-second sessions) to link a word to an image. In contrast, the cats only needed two nine-second sessions—just four exposures in total—to memorise the connection.
Why do cats learn so quickly?
This impressive speed does not necessarily mean that cats have superior language skills to humans. Human language relies on complex grammar, syntax, and symbols that only we naturally develop.
However, the researchers believe this quick response is down to their intense environmental awareness and sharp hearing:
- Constant passive listening: Even when they seem to be ignoring us, cats are constantly tuned in. They absorb the sounds and visual cues from the humans they live with.
- Quick association: Cats have evolved to instantly connect specific sounds with events or objects, such as the sound of a tin opener, a key word, or a particular tone of voice.
This study confirms what many owners have long suspected: our cats are listening to us much more closely than they let on, and they decode our language far quicker than we ever imagined.
