When our little animals curl up for one of their many daily naps, we tend to think they simply lie down wherever feels most comfortable. Yet, if you watch closely as a cat settles on its side, a striking detail soon becomes clear: most of them routinely favour the very same side.
As reported by Sciencepost, scientists from several international universities wanted to unravel this mystery by studying the sleep habits of over 400 pet cats. The outcome of their research was clear-cut: nearly two thirds of the observed felines deliberately chose to lie on their left side. That is far too strong a preference to be a coincidence.
A brain mechanism designed for safety
To explain this curious behaviour, researchers looked to neurology and the unique way mammalian brains function. In cats, information picked up by the left visual field is processed directly by the right hemisphere of the brain. Crucially, this area of the brain is the one that manages spatial awareness, quick threat analysis and emergency movement coordination.
By falling asleep on their left side, cats naturally position their body so that as soon as they open their eyes, their left visual field immediately scans the room. The right hemisphere can then analyse the slightest presence or danger without losing a single fraction of a second.
A wild instinct alive and well in our living rooms
Spending between 12 and 16 hours a day snoozing, felines remain naturally cautious creatures. Even when tucked up safely in a loving home, they keep intact the defence strategies inherited from their wild ancestors. Choosing a high perch or lying on a specific side are part of these quiet little rituals that give them total peace of mind.
The next time you catch your companion sleeping on their favourite side, you will know that behind those gentle purrs lies a fascinating instinctive mechanism. It is wonderful proof that our cherished pets never cease to amaze us!
