Dog owners have been warned of the risk of hot pavements, as temperatures are due to soar this week.
The UK Health and Security Agency has encouraged owners to follow an 8am to 8pm rule, in an effort to keep pets safe.
The 8-8 rule
"Plan ahead with your walk. Don't venture too far from home, and ensure you walk in the shade and on grass where possible and stay within easy reach of water" explained Nicki Fox RVN CertVNECC.
"Avoid walking during the hottest parts of the day - try to go out before 8am and after 8pm during particularly hot spells of weather".
Signs of heatstroke
Brain games and interactive toys are a great way of keeping your dog feeling mentally stimulated in the hours between 8am and 8pm, with no need to expose them to the risks of the intense heat and scorching pavements.
When you do walk your dog, it's important to monitor them carefully."Familiarise yourself with the signs of heatstroke, such as heavy panting and difficulty breathing, drooling, lethargy, vomiting and collapse." said Dr. Fox.
