Around 5am on Tuesday morning, officers received a report about a dog barking incessantly in a parked car on Catherinaland, in the Mariahoeve and Marlot district.
Local residents were concerned as the animal was trapped inside the car, and with no owner visible nearby, they decided to call for help.
Urgent rescue
Police tried to contact the car's owner, but when nobody answered, they knew they would have to take matters into their own hands. As the situation became increasingly worrying for the dog, the officers decided to take action.
With one well-aimed blow, an officer broke a window. The team pulled the dog to safety before leaving a note on the windscreen. "We have smashed your window because of your dog" it read.
Warning issued to owner
Shortly afterwards, the owner got in touch. The dog was returned to him, but police stressed that any repeat incident would have consequences.
"If this happens again, there will be a formal discussion," explained a spokesperson. We only hope the owner has learnt from this incident, and that they will be more mindful of where they leave their dog in the future.
