Andrew Claridge-Fleming, 57, left four gundogs in crates in the back of his Land Rover Discovery in New Milton, Hampshire, on 3 August 2023.
Temperatures reached 23 °C. By the time he returned, three dogs, including two belonging to clients, had died.
Surviving dog treated for hyperthermia
The court heard Claridge-Fleming had been unexpectedly called away to drive his wife to a relative’s home, leaving the animals with water and the vehicle’s doors open. He claimed someone had shut the doors while he was away.
Among the dead were Milo, a six-month-old Labrador, Bodger, a cocker spaniel, and Rocky, a cockapoo. The surviving dog, also named Rocky, was treated for hyperthermia.
Shocking lack of care
Judge Suzanne Evans KC called the incident a “shocking lack of care” and handed Claridge-Fleming a 27-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, along with 180 hours of unpaid work.
The RSPCA said the case should serve as a reminder never to leave dogs in vehicles, even briefly, during warm weather.
