Simple is often the most effective when it comes to pet toys and forms of enrichment, as the latest phenomenon goes to show.
Concrete slabs seem to be the latest trend among cat owners, who have been sharing their pets' unusual reactions online.
Why do cats love concrete?
Clips shared around the world show cats sniffing, purring and scratching their backs on concrete slabs, all seemingly fascinated with this simple piece of enrichment.
But why does the concrete capture their attention?
Firstly, "they're new and out of place", explains Dr. Annie, who currently works as a pet behaviour scientist for Purina. "There's nothing quite like them in the home environment".
The slabs also allow cats to leave their scent, in addition to offering some pretty amazing scratches!
Mixed reviews online
While the concrete slabs seem to have received a warm reception from the cats themselves, they received mixed reviews from animal lovers online.
"My cat used to love rolling around on the concrete in my basement", shared a viewer.
"The concrete block only works for imprisoned cats. Those cats that live a full life by going outside don't care about a concrete slab in the house", wrote another.
