A heartbreaking case of animal cruelty has sparked a Scottish SPCA investigation after a cat family was found abandoned in a box beside a busy Glasgow road.

The tabby male and female cats, along with their litter of kittens, were left inside a cardboard box on Royston Road in the city’s east end.

A litter tray had been placed inside, but there was no food or protection from traffic or the elements.

Miraculously, all of the cats survived the ordeal and are now in the care of the SSPCA at their Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Cardonald.

Images shared by the charity show the mother cat nursing her kittens, while the male appears wide-eyed and terrified.

The SSPCA has condemned the abandonment as “deeply distressing” and is urging anyone with information to come forward.

Shocking act of cruelty

According to Cats Protection, 1,705 cats were abandoned in Scotland last year.

“This is a shocking act of cruelty,” said an SSPCA spokesperson. “These cats were left to die. It’s sheer luck they were found in time.”
