When work began on the old house in Colmenar Viejo, the builders decided to carry out one final check inside.
Imagine their surprise when they discovered three tiny residents had made themselves at home there, and nobody had seen them move in!
Three kittens in hiding
Having spotted the siblings just in time, they were able to catch them before contacting a local rescue centre.
The kittens, it turned out, belonged to a group of strays that were being monitored by animal welfare workers - and they had suddenly gone missing without a trace.
Finally safe
Two boys and a girl, the litter has been nicknamed the 'Demolition Cats', in memory of their shaky start in life.
But now the future looks bright for the trio. One kitten has already found their forever home, and staff hope to see the other two happy and settled with their families very soon.
