Axel was just 14 months old when he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukaemia.
The diagnosis devastated Axel's parents, who were determined to do everything to help him fight the disease and have the best life possible.
Comfort kitten
As a positive distraction from his treatment and because they knew he adored cats, the boy's parents adopted an adorable little kitten called Bingo. The kitten had ended up at a cat shelter as a stray after being abandoned on the street.
From the very moment Bingo and Axel met, they became instant best friends. It was as if the kitten knew her new playmate was going through extremely tough times and needed extra love and comfort.
The pair quickly became inseparable, much to the delight of Axel's family. Bingo is more than happy to tolerate Axel invading her space all the time and seems to know instinctively when the boy needs cuddles.
Brave boy
Axel had gone through some hard times during his treatment, and Bingo seems to be able to sense when he's not feeling good and needs her to be extra calm and gentle. She'd happily stay by his side whenever he needed her.
With Bingo's help, Axel bravely fought his leukaemia, and now, at age two, he is finally cancer-free and receiving less aggressive treatment. Now Axel feels much better; he spends most of his time getting up to mischief with Bingo!
