The eight-month-old calico cat had found an unlikely home in the Pioneer Memorial Library in Fredericksburg, where she had quietly become a favourite among visitors.
Described as affectionate and gentle, Pepper was often seen lounging in sunny reading corners and befriending guests.
Evicted from library
However, on 15 April, her time at the library came to an abrupt end after concerns were raised in a private Facebook group about allergies and the appropriateness of animals in public spaces.
Following a closed-door meeting, Gillespie County officials decided to remove Pepper, citing a lack of prior approval and the divisive nature of the debate.
The decision provoked widespread backlash, with thousands signing petitions to let Pepper stay. “She’s become an essential part of the community,” read one.
Happy ending for Pepper
Thankfully, Pepper’s story has a happy ending. The Hill Country SPCA took her in and the adorable feline was soon adopted by a local family, who describe her as “super special and precious”.
They’ve promised to share Pepper’s adventures online, ensuring the beloved library cat continues to charm hearts far beyond the stacks of books.
Congratulations Pepper!
