There are millions of stray cats and dogs living on the streets, and with homelessness on the rise globally, the number is only expected to grow.
In Stockton, California, the non-profit organisation Hungry Tailz is working to help.
Hairless dog covered in marks
Every Friday, the organisation's rescuers visit homeless encampments, providing food, medication, and spaying services for female dogs. It was during one of these visits that they met Naya, a puppy in desperate need of care.
A homeless woman had found Naya at another encampment, hairless and covered in scribbles. However, the markings weren’t ink, they were the result of a severe skin condition caused by Demodex mites, which are passed from mother to pup shortly after birth.
If left untreated, the condition can cause hair loss and painful skin irritation, particularly in puppies with weakened immune systems.
A fresh start
Fortunately, Naya had someone looking out for her. The woman who rescued her ensured she was cared for, and thanks to treatment with an oral flea and tick medication that also eliminates mites, she is now on the road to recovery.
Naya is currently safe in a foster home, receiving the love and attention she needs. Hungry Tailz shared a video of her journey on TikTok, hoping to raise awareness about the plight of animals in homeless encampments.
Her transformation is already remarkable—and her future is looking much brighter.
