Catastrophic flooding, known locally as DANA, has had a profound impact on Spain, with areas such as Valencia and Andalusia badly affected.
Among the victims are many animals, including dogs in kennels who had no means of escape.
An urgent rescue
In this particular case, it wasn't a rescue centre housing the dogs that was at risk, it was an illegal Rottweiler breeding operation.
Agents from the canine unit of the Benidorm police department shared a video which quickly went viral.
They recorded the rescue of a pregnant female Rottweiler, who was suffering such bad hypothermia she could barely stand.
The shocking clip shows the dog sitting in inches of brown, muddy water, while two other dogs look in from the neighbouring kennel.
Building trust
The officer calmly approaches the sweet Rottweiler, gently stroking her for reassurance.
She accepts the attention, but still shows no sign of being able to move.
Thankfully, the experienced officer is able to move her towards the exit, taking her to safety.
"Thank you for giving her your time", commented a viewer.
"They save us, and we save them", wrote the police unit when sharing the video. "Human beings are capable of the the best and the worst things".
