Kayla Sargeant had left her front door open when she turned around and found the elderly pitbull inside.
The dog, who had no identification and appeared dirty, was immediately friendly, eagerly wanting attention.
Food, love and affection
Sargeant and her four roommates decided to care for the dog while figuring out what to do next. Although the dog briefly disappeared, he returned to their yard regularly, enjoying water, food, and affection from the group.
Eventually, they took him to a vet, where a microchip revealed that his original owner could no longer care for him.
House Hippo is home
Without hesitation, the roommates decided to take the dog in. Now affectionately called “House Hippo” or “Old Man,” the senior dog has settled into his new home, where he is clean, loved, and well-fed.
With two roommates working in veterinary medicine, the group is well-prepared to care for the dog. They remain in contact with his original family and are committed to providing for him as long as needed.
The once-stray pittie found more than just a home; he found a family.
Congratulations, House Hippo! We hope you love life in your new home.
