A shocking discovery was made on a hot August day in North Carolina when a passerby spotted a black wire cage on the side of a busy street.

As the person approached the cage for a closer look, they couldn’t believe what they saw: a 12-week-old puppy, alone and abandoned.

Inside the cage, the puppy, now named Caerus, was accompanied by an empty food bag and a handwritten note from his previous owner.

The note simply read, “Please take me... I am a 12-week-old dog. I don’t bite. Take good care of him. He has food with him.”

The dog had spent hours in the cage under the hot sun, but the good Samaritan quickly moved it to the shade and called for help.

Happy ending for Caerus!

Animal control officers arrived and took Caerus to a vet, where he was found to be healthy despite the ordeal.

A month after his rescue, authorities announced that Caerus had found a loving forever home, though he still needs to be spayed or neutered.

Officials issued a stern reminder that abandoning pets is illegal, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000. They urged residents to hand over unwanted pets to shelters instead of leaving them on the streets.

Local police shared Caerus' story as a warning to dog owners:
