Detection dog leads search for deadly African tree snake in northern Germany

A deadly African tree snake remains on the loose in northern Germany, but a specially trained detection dog has provided a new lead.

"Woody," a species detection dog, has been key in the search for the venomous snake, which has evaded capture for six months in the Oeversee region.

Woody recently picked up the snake's scent in a remote forest area, confirming the reptile is still alive and thriving.

Antidote ready!

Despite the snake's potentially fatal bite, local authorities assure the public that there is no immediate danger.

The area where the snake was last detected lies 600 to 700 metres from residential zones.

As a precaution, antidote supplies have been secured at Hamburg-Eppendorf University Hospital, as the venom's effects take several hours to manifest.

The snake's origin in Schleswig-Holstein remains a mystery, with theories ranging from accidental transport to deliberate release.
