The RSPCA has spoken out against a popular social media trend among Gen-Z users who put their cats on leads and take them for walks.

Videos showing cats on harnesses have been popping up all over TikTok as owners choose to keep their pets indoors and only take them out on a lead rather than let them roam freely.

Increased demand for cat leads

In fact, the demand for cat leads and harnesses has increased significantly, with about 6,000 searches per month.

But animal experts warn that this practice could distress cats, as the harness may limit their ability to move freely or escape stressful situations, such as encounters with off-leash dogs.

There is an ongoing debate about whether owners should keep cats indoors or allow them outside to roam. Many owners now prefer to keep their cats inside to protect them from traffic, diseases and threats from other animals. Concerns about the impact of domestic cats on wildlife are also influencing this shift.

Frighten cats

However, the RSPCA is concerned that some cats may be frightened by being on a lead. They also have concerns that it can make it harder for cats to escape potentially stressful situations.

While social media has driven this trend, it’s crucial to consider whether this is right for your own cat," advises the charity.

What are your thoughts on this trend? Do you take your cat out on a lead?
