You'd think everyone knows why a pet owner's phone number is on their dog's collar. However, one Reddit user's experience suggests otherwise.
Unexpected message
A user with the nickname AvocadoDemonde shared a peculiar incident on Reddit.
While out with her dog, a stranger asked to stroke it. She agreed, seeing no harm. But later, she received a text message:
"Hi, I got your number from your dog's collar. Thanks for letting me pet him. We should have a drink sometime :)".
But while the woman did not respond, the stranger persisted, texting:
"Why do you put your number on your dog's collar if you don't want people to write to you? What's your problem?".
Safety concerns
Typically, phone numbers on dog collars are for emergencies, such as if the pet gets lost, not for social or dating purposes.
She posted a screenshot of these messages on Reddit, sparking reactions from users. "I can't believe there are actually people with this mindset," one person commented. Another added, "The insinuation that you are trying to hit people up with your phone number on your dog's collar is just crazy."
Some users raised safety concerns, noting that contact details on a dog's collar could be misused. "Some men memorise your address and phone number... If you get a bad feeling or if they stare at your dog's collar a little too long, walk away," one person advised.
Should you engrave your contact details on your dog's collar? This incident might make you think twice.
