A couple from Tamworth are facing a staggering £11,000 gas bill for nearly two decades of unpaid energy. But the real shocker is who might be responsible.

To everyone's astonishment, the alleged culprit behind the astronomical bill could be the couple's mischievous cat, Ernie.

Eric versus postie

It all started when Lee Haynes and Jo Woodley found themselves entangled in a dispute with the Royal Mail, claiming that their deliveries to the couple were being disrupted due to Ernie's aggressive behaviour. They claimed Ernie would claw at both the mail and the postie's fingers, leading to a mail delivery standoff.

After the couple shared details of the feud and the colossal gas bill on social media, many suggested a connection between the two.

The couple received bills for everything but gas for months, leading to a frantic search for their gas supplier. Even their housing association landlord was at a loss on resolving the matter.

Whopping bill

However, Lee and Jo received a letter from gas distributor Cadent earlier this year asking them to inspect their gas supply. Then, three months later, they received a follow-up letter from Cadent revealing the shocking sum of £10,824.87 owed for gas usage from 2005 to 2023.

Could this be because Ernie's antics meant a lack of communication from the gas supplier?

Cadent is responsible for investing and recovering the cost of gas consumed outside of a supplier contract. They also assumed customers of their support in cases requiring repayment such as this.
