An entire police unit has gathered to say goodbye to a good comrade, knowing it’s the last time they will see brave K9 Hunter.

It’s a heartbreaking sight as police officers stand by to bid farewell to the terminally ill German Shepherd who has been a key member of their team for a decade.

Heartbreaking health news

Just days before, the vet had shared the devasting news with Hunter’s trainer and handler, Officer Michael D’Arresta, that the dog had a very aggressive form of liver cancer. Sadly, they recommended that Hunter be put to sleep.

Officer D’Arresta and Hunter had worked together for ten years and made an exceptional team. But now the devastated officer can be seen carrying his dog in his arms as fellow officers line either side of the path to say their final farewell to Hunter. A heartbreaking photo shows an emotional Officer D’Arresta burying his face in the dog’s fur to hide his tears.

Final farewell

The photo spread quickly online, prompting pet owners to express their sympathy to the police department and support for honouring this canine hero. After all, during his career as a K9, Hunter had located hundreds of missing children and adults and caught countless suspects with Officer D’Arresta by his side. Just a month earlier, Hunter had tracked down some important evidence in a drug case.

Hunter’s former police department posted on Facebook:

“This team seemed made for each other. It will never be the same again. Rest in peace Hunter, you did a great job. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Officer Michael D’Aresta and his family.”

RIP Hunter
