When a distressed kitten with a severely swollen nostril was rushed to the vet, the staff knew they had to act fast.

It was quickly revealed that a parasitic botfly had lodged deep into the tiny kitten's nostril.

Delicate procedure

Once the medicine given to the kitten to sedate it took effect, the vet got to work. With the kitten wrapped in a towel and soothed by a vet nurse, the vet removed the botfly. They must be careful; otherwise, the larva could end up pushed further up the nasal passage or break in half.

Fortunately, the delicate extraction was a complete success. The vet removes the entire larva from the kitten's nose in one piece. But what left everyone stunned was the size of the botfly. It was huge! But despite its size, it had managed to squeeze itself inside the kitten's tiny nostril.

Preventative action

In a post on Facebook, the vet clinic stressed the importance of preventing parasites in pets, especially during summer. They urged pet owners to recognise symptoms early and get medical treatment immediately.

After successful treatment, the adorable kitten became available for adoption from a local shelter.
