As soon as Sean arrived, he was hit by the smell of gas, so he knew there was a leak somewhere. He carried out the usual tests, which revealed a huge drop in gas levels.
The woman had mentioned that her cat had been worrying at a specific area of the floor and scratching and chewing at the carpet. Sean decided to trust the animal's instinct and focus on the area where the cat had been trying to dig.
At first, he couldn't hear anything, but as Sean pulled back the carpet, he could hear the sound of gas escaping underneath the floor. Perhaps this is what the cat had heard too.
Danger averted
As he lifted up the floorboards, he noticed a hole in the pipe directly underneath where the cat had been scratching.
According to Sean, if the woman had turned the lights on, the gas leak was big enough to have caused a massive explosion. He immediately turned off the gas and got to work replacing the section of the pipework with the hole.
While it was a job well done, Sean said he couldn't have tackled it so quickly without the help of the cat, saying,
What a clever cat!
