The police were conducting a routine vehicle control which is a common occurrence on the motorway during the night from Fridays to Saturdays.
But as the police approached a car which they later found out belonged to a 38-year-old woman, their senses were attacked with a horribly unpleasant odour.
A horrible discovery!
The police decided to investigate the car and what they found shocked them deeply. Inside the car were boxes with cats inside them.
The cats were all in bad condition, not having been fed any food or water for days. The smell was coming from their faeces because they had been locked for days without any care or attention.
The police saved the day!
According to the woman who was keeping the cats locked up, she wanted to go to Vienna to sell them there. For breeds such as the Maine Coon cat, there are very high prices. But the police do not let the woman continue with her plan and decides to make inquiries into the situation. In fact, there was already an order in the district to seize the purebred cats from her– which the woman had been able to avoid until now.
The police then alerted volunteers of the animal welfare center Freistadt and the Association Animal Rescue Emergency Assistance. In the hours of the early morning, the volunteers pick up the cats and take them back to the shelter where they can be properly cared for.
Now the velvet paws are in the animal shelter in Freistadt, where they are being nursed back to health. Sadly, one of the cats was pregnant, and despite an operation to try and save her babies, they did not survive.
