It was a find that brought tears to the eyes of even the seasoned workers of Altmünster animal shelter in Austria: a cat and her litter discarded by an owner in a quiet car park and left to die.

On 10th July, a vigilant lorry driver was the first to find the strays. Leaving his cab, he walked over to nearby bushes and found three kittens barely alive and motherless.

Wasting no time, he called Altmünster for help.

Anger and disbelief

The team arrived and found the three kittens, but the search for the mother continued throughout the night. Eventually, with the help of numerous passersby, the queen was caught the following morning along with a fourth kitten.

The clowder has since been looked after by staff at the shelter and their health is improving by leaps and bounds.

On the 13th of July, the animal shelter posted on its Facebook page: "Alina (Hebrew: luck), Ben (Hebrew: son of luck), Cody (Celtic / Irish: happy son of the owner) and Yoshi (Japanese: luck) are our absolute lucky children."

In a Facebook post, the shelter described how they had been called to the isolated car park to assist in the search for the animals.

Sad and pathetic actions

(Translated from German) “We brought the mother together with the rest of the babies. But watching this misery is just so sh**! We are so f*****g angry when we look at the kittens' eyes. They are glued shut, inflamed and are clearly painful. We can see they are exhausted. They sleep all the time, which is understandable given the circumstances. They will be well taken care of by us and the vets. The four little ones are fighters and their mum takes great care of them. All of them are trustworthy, not at all like stray cats."

Just sad and pathetic to know that such unbelievable people are walking around among us.”
