When animal welfare officers and the police arrived at a remote farm in the Mendhausen district of Römhild, South Thuringia, Germany, the situation seemed straightforward. An 82-year-old man had breached animal welfare laws, which had resulted in a complete ban on him keeping any animals.
The officers' mission that day was to find the 40 cats living on the farm, secure them, and take them to a rescue centre. But what they stumbled upon in the dark corners of the property turned the animal rescue into a deadly nightmare in a split second!
A deadly arsenal uncovered
The 82-year-old farm owner was no stranger to the authorities. Just last year, animal welfare advocates had to seize around 80 neglected cats in a dramatic operation. But at the time, no one suspected the terrible secret the man was still hiding.
As police officers searched the farm for the remaining 40 cats, they made a discovery that literally took their breath away. Tucked away among cat supplies and farm debris, they stumbled, completely unprepared, upon a deadly arsenal. The farm was filled with firearms, vast quantities of ammunition, and dangerous chemicals! The officers immediately recognised the extreme danger: the property was a veritable powder keg.
The animal rescue suddenly became a secondary concern, and the operation command immediately raised the alarm. Moments later, heavy vehicles from the fire brigade, the Suhl criminal police, and specialists from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) were racing to the small village with sirens blaring. A wide cordon had to be established around the site. The 82-year-old is now under investigation for serious offences, and the operation, which lasted several days, kept the emergency services on high alert.
A happy ending for the cats
While heavily equipped specialists searched the explosive-laden farm, there was at least one happy and heartwarming outcome. Despite the highly dangerous situation, rescuers managed to get all 40 cats safely off the property.
The felines, who had been living for years amidst an arsenal of weapons and chemicals, were taken safely to various rescue centres. They are now, finally, safe and sound.
