If there's one thing that makes the festive season more magical, it's a Christmas movie with a dog in it. Here are 12 of the best holiday dog movies out there.

As the temperatures drop and the holiday season approaches, there's something special about cuddling up on the sofa to watch a film with your four-legged friend.

Our top picks are bound to bring you joy, laughter and plenty of festive cheer.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas

While this Christmas classic may not immediately spring to mind as a dog movie, we feel How The Grinch Stole Christmas most definitely deserves a spot on the list.

The Grinch may be envious and spiteful, but he always has a soft spot for his furry bestie Max.

In the live-action adaptation starring Jim Carrey, Max was actually played by six different rescue dogs, who all went on to find loving homes.

A Christmas Story

Perhaps one of the most famous Christmas movies of all time, A Christmas Story follows the Parker family in 1940.

The beloved classic doesn't just have a dog in it, it has a whole pack of dogs. "The Bumpus Hounds" are a pack of Bloodhounds who sneak in from next door and destroy the Christmas turkey.

You may want to cover your pup's eyes for that bit, to stop them getting any ideas!

Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp may be more of a love story, but the well-loved film actually begins and ends with Christmas.

The furry couple's romance begins on Christmas day and ends with the whole family celebrating exactly a year later. This time, though, they're joined by their adorable puppies and the friends they met along the way.

Against all odds, this star-crossed duo shows us the meaning of true love, in a family-friendly tale that works perfectly at Christmas.

Beethoven's Christmas Adventure

A Dog Named Christmas

This adorable tale tells the story of the McCray family, who decide to foster a Labrador Retriever over the holiday season.

During his stay, their son forms a special bond with the loveable pup, who he goes on to name Christmas.

This encourages many members of the community to participate in the local "Adopt a Dog for Christmas program", which results in many unfortunate pups finding their own loving homes.

Olive, the Other Reindeer

If you're after something as entertaining as it is heartwarming, then look no further.

This humorous animated comedy features Olive, a dog who mistakenly believes she must replace one of Santa's reindeers.

With 7/10 stars on IMDB, Olive's adorable antics are sure to have everyone smiling.

An All Dogs Christmas Carol

We all know the well-loved Christmas classic A Christmas Carol, but did you know there was another version?

This animated film puts our four-legged friends right at the centre of the movie, with Charlie and Itchy trying to save Christmas for a group of orphaned children.

An All Dogs Christmas Carol may only get a 34% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but this is one to try if you're looking for a twist on the Dickens classic.

One Hundred and One Dalmatians

Christmas seems like the perfect time to celebrate happily-ever-afters, and what better way to do it than by watching One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

Having covered miles on foot over snow-covered countryside, Pongo and Perdita finally make it home, bringing 99 puppies with them just in time for Christmas.

A Charlie Brown Christmas

A Charlie Brown Christmas is a beloved animated television special, based on Charles M. Shulz's Peanuts comic strip.

Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws

Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws is the perfect family-friendly holiday movie. And the best part is, it isn't a Christmas movie with just one dog in it - it features five fast-talking, adorable Golden Retriever puppies!

A spinoff of the hugely popular Airbud series, this sweet tale sees Santa Paws' son Puppy Paws discover what the Christmas spirit is all about.

The 12 Dogs of Christmas

This touching tale takes place in a town that has banned dogs. But when Emma O'Connor is sent to live with her aunt, she decides to take matters into her own hands, setting up a pageant to change the town's mind.

"A great movie for the young and young at heart", reads a review online.

In addition to the feel-good factor, the cast ofThe 12 Dogs of Christmas features over 100 different dogs to admire!

A Christmas Tail

This family-friendly classic follows the story of Maggie, a single parent who adopts a dog for her son. Only later does she discover the dog ended up at the pound after chasing a cat, leaving his real family in pieces. A custody battle ensues between Maggie and the single dad who originally owned the Labrador Retriever, each desperate to keep him with them.

You may already be able to imagine how the movie ends, but it's still a heartwarming story to enjoy.

Whether they're bounding through snowy fields, bringing a family together, or saving Christmas, dogs in movies always seem to add an extra layer of warmth to the holiday season.
